What is 3PM?
The core idea of Predictive, Preventive and Personalized Medicine (3PM / PPPM) is:
Use data about an individual to predict disease early, prevent it when possible, and tailor treatment specifically to that person instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach.
It has three main pillars:
Predictive
- Identify a person’s risk before disease appears.
- Uses genetics, biomarkers, family history, lifestyle, imaging, and AI analysis.
- Example: detecting high risk for type 2 diabetes years in advance.
Preventive
- Act early to reduce or stop disease development.
- Focuses on lifestyle changes, monitoring, vaccines, screening, and early interventions.
- Example: personalized diet and exercise plans to prevent heart disease.
Personalized
- Customize diagnosis and treatment to the individual patient.
- Recognizes that people respond differently to drugs and therapies.
- Example: choosing a cancer drug based on the tumor’s genetic mutations.
Traditional medicine often treats disease after symptoms appear. 3PM aims to shift healthcare toward:
earlier detection
proactive prevention
individualized care
better outcomes with fewer side effects
A simple way to summarize it:
“The right prevention and treatment, for the right person, at the right time.”
